They are called Augie March, they are from Melbourne, Australia, and they are currently working up their fourth record.

They first came to my attention when an Australian friend sent me a copy of their first CD, Sunset Studies (2000), back in 2002. The 76-minute album was difficult to penetrate at first–soaked in a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere. What hooked me in initially were the absolutely beautiful lyrics, full of lines like “When the sun comes up, you know it’s really going down / You only framed it incorrectly, now you cannot turn it ’round.” With further listens, the record slowly began to unwind itself becoming (and remaining) one of my favorites.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe that album has been released in North America, however the two subsequent (and arguably more accessible) albums Strange Bird (2002) and Moo You Bloody Choir (2006) have been (though Strange Bird is tricker to find) and are absolutely worth nicking.

Moo began to see them getting more attention outside Australia and 2007 saw their first tour of the states. I got a chance to see them live and it was a wonderful performance–a shame that so few people came out to check it out. Here’s hoping #4 will break big.

For your consideration, something from each album:

First, a performance of “There is No Such Place” from this year’s Big Day Out festival:

Second, an audio-only track of one of their more rocking numbers, “This Train Will Be Taking No Passengers,” that someone uploaded to Youtube:

And finally, a performance of the single “One Crowded Hour” on Craig Ferguson:

  2. That’s one of my favourites of theirs.
“Just Passing Through” is another good rockin’ one, if you can find that somewhere.
